In contrast to cylindrical and needle roller bearings, which require precise shaft alignment, this is not required for toroidal roller bearings, which can also handle shaft deflection under load. In many cases, at least one of the major dimensions of the bearing, usually the bore, is predetermined by the mechanical design. Small diameter shafts usually choose deep groove ball bearings, while large diameter shafts can consider using cylindrical roller bearings, spherical roller bearings and full complement roller bearings without outer ring. If radial space is limited, bearings with a small cross-sectional height must be selected, such as needle roller assemblies, some series of deep groove bearings and spherical roller bearings. Where axial space is limited and particularly narrow bearings are required, some deep groove ball and cylindrical roller bearing families are available.
